Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Ethiopia

Location: Addis Ababa

Total Budget: $75,520

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

There are 1,000 students at Kalala Learning Village, but no high school within 7 miles of the village. Families will not allow their children, especially the girls, to walk in the dark to the nearest school. Without finishing high school, girls are forced into early marriages or worse. 100% of the students have passed the national exam to attend high school; and they just need a few classrooms (four) for the 120 children who are ready for grades 11 and 12. Cost for four classrooms is $75,000. Would like to begin construction in time for the second semester in January. Addis Ababa Arada club, 21 members, has visited the school, is mentoring the students, and will help with a career fair, and will encourage the girls to complete college and support themselves. They are also going to teach proper hygiene, especially menstrual hygiene. The high school will greatly improve the opportunities for the future success of these students, especially the young ladies. With more educated young people, the village will prosper, as they start businesses and grow their local economy.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
