Health System Strengthening for Rural Hospitals in Nigeria: R.I. District 9142 for 2018-2019
Project Description:
This project will help provide needed medical equipment for 3 rural Missionary Hospitals in southeast Nigeria, specifically in Abia State. These hospitals serve mainly rural communities with a total population of approximately 1.4 million people. Two containers will be sent, filled with equipment donated by Project C.U.R.E. such as: operating room equipment, anesthesia machines, X-ray machines, ultrasound machines, lab chemistry analyzers and supplies.
The Missionary Hospitals often serve the most vulnerable patients who cannot afford services at private facilities found in larger cities. Additionally, the Missionary Hospitals may be the only facilities in a many mile radius with trained medical professionals. Many of the facilities in scope lack basic supplies and are in dire need of updated hospital beds, biomedical and diagnostic equipment such as ultrasounds, and lab equipment for rapid detection of infectious disease.
Melisa Esposti, of Project C.U.R.E. in Denver, conducted an on-site, comprehensive needs assessment for each facility. Working in tandem with the medical directors of each facility, the top priority needs were identified. This priority equipment will fill 2 containers.
On average, a 40' container of medical supplies and equipment costs $32.5k to ship and deliver to the hospital, yet contains $366k worth of medical supplies and equipment.
Cindy Cloyd is working with local Rotarians in R.I. District 9142 to make sure the donated medical equipment is installed and maintained.
Cost of Project:
Shipping of 2 containers, ground transportation and contingency fund is $71600.
This will provide approximately $732k worth of vitally needed equipment and supplies for the hospitals.

The two containers of medical equipment and supplies donated by Project C.U.R.E. have arrived in Nigeria. The first container was loaded in Phoenix, Arizona in January, 2020. The second container was loaded in Centennial, Colorado in February, 2020. Both containers arrived at Madonna Hospital in Umuahia, Nigeria in late May, 2020. The medical equipment and supplies are for Madonna Hospital, Mercy Hospital and St. Michael’s Hospital in Nigeria. Members of the Rotary Club of Umuahia assisted in unloading one of the containers.
The priority items were taken to each hospital. Due to the rainy season (March - October) and the condition of the roads, final delivery of the remaining equipment and supplies to Mercy Hospital and St. Michael’s Hospital will be done when the rains end.

This project remains in the implementation phase partially because the two containers of donated medical equipment arrived during the rainy season. The equipment and supplies for Madonna Hospital were taken to Madonna Hospital which is located in Umuahia.
The equipment and supplies for St. Michael's Hospital and Mercy Hospital were securely stored in Umuahia until the rainy season ended. The equipment and supplies that did not require consistent electricity where taken to the two hospitals when the road conditions improved. These two rural hospitals do not have access to consistent and reliable electricity. Local fundraising efforts are underway to raise money for a generator and a night security guard for both hospitals and then the remaining equipment will be delivered.

Cindy - I see in the Grant Center that a report was due to RI on this project by Oct 11, 2021. Please submit a progress report in the grant center as soon as possible. Our district can lose al grant funding if reports are not submitted on time. Best, --Robin Steele D5440 Grants Chair

A progress report was submitted to RI in early October 2021. All of the donated medical supplies and most of the equipment have been transported to the 3 hospitals: Mercy, St. Michael's and Madonna. Some pieces of equipment meant for Mercy Hospital and St. Michael's Hospital have been stored in Umuahia because these 2 hospitals do not have a reliable electrical power supply. The Diocesan Health Board will allocate this remaining equipment to local hospitals that do have a reliable power supply. When the remaining pieces of equipment have been distributed to the local hospitals, a final report will be submitted.
