Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: India

Location: Tiruchengode, Tamilnadu

Total Budget: $0

Area of Focus: Maternal and child health

The Need:

Tiruchengode is a small town in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. There are nearly 175,000 households with a population of nearly 650,000 in and around the Town.

Tiruchengode Government Hospital is run by the Government of Tamilnadu providing free medical treatment and health care to the poor people living in and around Tiruchengode. Everyday 1000 -1200 poor people visit this hospital for their medical and health needs. 120 -150 deliveries are happening every month. As the Hospital gets complicated cases referred by the Primary Health Centres, number of critical cases and critical deliveries are also more. Births of preterm babies are quite common and babies with congenital anomalies are also significant. Rotary Club of Tiruchengode has developed a Neo-Natal Care ward under Matching Grant # 69040 during 2008-09. The ward has been serving the needy babies of poor patients and has saved lot of precious lives. Number of births has increased many folds over the years and the babies requiring special care has also grown substantially, since we developed the Neo-natal care ward in 2009. On discussing with the Hospital management and the concerned Doctors, it has been found imperative that the Hospital needs some more equipment to upgrade the Neo-natal and Baby care ward. On detailed discussions it has been ascertained that the following equipment, costing around INR. 4,403,000/- or US $ 68,800, are needed. This upgradation will help to save 400 babies every year.

Equipment intended to be procured: New Born Ventilator; Ultra sound/ Echo machine / Dopplor; High Flow Nasal Canula; BIPAP machine; Arterial Blood Gas alalyser machine

How the project will meet those needs:

With the additional equipment the Doctors and the Staff nurses will be able to provide respiratory support to the preterm babies and babies with congenital anomalies. They will also be able to identify the deficiencies of the babies and provide them medical support. This will save lot of valuable lives of underprivileged parents.

Timeline:

The Project could be executed within 3 months.

Project funds will be used for:

Purchase of equipment for the neo-natal care. Training will be given to the staff nurses free of cost by the Doctors.

How the club members will be involved:

The club members will, in discussion with the Doctors, involve in identifying suitable equipment; they will involve in identifying quality vendors; they will involve in negotiating the prices; they will inspect the equipment on its arrival and ensure that the supplies are as per the order; they will also ensure that the equipment are properly installed; they will give media coverage for the project; and they will make regular visits to the hospital and evaluate the outcome.
