Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Brazil

Location: Lins-SP

Total Budget: $30,000

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene

Digesters are underground sanitary appliances, work by fermentation of microorganisms transforms the organic matter in fecal minerals.

Farmers and their families benefit from this project, reside in rural areas where there is no drinking water but use the water from wells and use the famous fossa black that contaminates the soil and groundwater. Thus, there is the imminent possibility of these people, for disease arising from infection transmitted through urine, faeces and water as hepatitis, cholera, salmonellosis and other. We think that with the use of this device will improve rural sanitation, develop organic agriculture and the possibility of better profits by selling their products.

These families survive planting and selling vegetables, fruits. We think that improving the living conditions of the whole family will benefit, allowing development work and obtaining better quality agricultural products, thus increasing the family income.

We know that one of the goals of the RI regard to the environment, to water and sanitation resources, so we set up this Global Grant Project, knowing that we are contributing to improving the health and natural resources. Still, farmers work getting more profit and maintaining their families in the countryside, and we are saving the water from the water table and its probable contamination, minimizing spending on chemical fertilizers and eliminating the open sewage that pollutes the environment and places people's health at risk.

With the acquisition of equipment, farmers will enter the workforce, installing the equipment. There will be supervision of the rotarians and that will provide technical support, monitoring and supervision work.

The total budget is U$30.000,00.

Note: This project is a second part, continuation of the previous one, already approved and executed. It was well done, and because of this, other family farmers who were not benefited, understood the need for implementation in their agricultural areas, aiming to protect soil and water, human health and food security.
