This VTT-GG1757637 to Train Women Peacebuilders project is designed to implement MBBBI's International Peace Training Institute (IPTI) in West Africa (Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Republic of Benin, and Sierra Leone). This VTT - IPTI focuses on increasing women's capacity to thrive as leaders in peacebuilding and also aims to increase the capacity of Rotary in the City of Lagos (and partnering clubs around the world) to develop and expand their peace-building work. There are already 40 applicants for 30 slots, so demand and need are clearly high. This is multi-country VTT is a cooperative effort by the local Host Rotary Club, Ikeja in Lagos (Dist 9110) The International Club, Emmaus, PA-USA and Mediators Beyond Borders International (MBBI) a Global Service Partner of Rotary.
IPTI was launched by MBBI in 2012 with the goal of developing a global network of women peace leaders. Rotary and MBBI have partnered on two previous collaborations, both of which were well-evaluated and highly successful -- Jakarta 2016 and funded by GG1640672, and Bogota 2017 and funded by GG1745757. This VTT - IPTI project in West Africa will focus on the development of the capacities of women as mediators and peacebuilders in countries where unresolved traumas of factional violence as well as land, interethnic, and international conflicts present recurrent obstacles to the personal and economic well-being of individuals, organizations, communities, and governments.
MBBI's IPTI has four key elements:
1) A five-day introductory training for a cohort of 30 women peacebuilders (chosen through an application process) from 5 countries in West Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Republic of Benin). The specific curriculum is drawn from a well-developed set of modules and will be based on a needs assessment of the accepted participants.
2) Monthly coaching sessions for the next 9 months provided by the MBBI trainers while participants are implementing new projects or expanding on their existing field work
3) A five-day advanced training, based on the training needs uncovered during coaching and field work, and
4) Access to an international network of other IPTI participants from different regions of the world to create an international working group sharing lessons learned and best practices in order to increase the on-going impact and success of the group members' projects.
Results from previous IPTIs, some funded with Rotary global grants, have been spectacular. The 117 participants trained so far have impacted over 20,000 people living in areas prone to conflict.
The projected outcomes of the project include: a) increased peacebuilding skills and activities of the participants in local projects and increased connection with Rotary peacebuilding efforts in their home countries; b) increased understanding and skills related to conflict resolution/prevention of invited NGO staff/volunteers and on-going collaboration with Lagos Rotary; c) increased community awareness of alternative ways to address conflict within the family and community; and d) increased branding of Rotary's peacebuilding efforts.
The cost of this project is $110,000 - to be funded by The Rotary Foundation, Host Club Rotary Club of Ikeja and District 9110, International Club Emmaus and District 7430.

MatchingGrants website requested our project status: We filed the final report in February 2022 [previously reported]. RI still has not accepted or commented on the report. The pandemic has delayed their work significantly. In April, the RI staff person said they will review it at some point.
