Due to politicial reasons in Aurukun we were unable to bring the VTT to this community. However we have identified the community of Lockhart River, we have had confirmation from the local council and the Inspector of the Cape York Police. We are currently waiting to confirm team and training dates. Brent Drage from the Foundation is aware and is supporting us. We will have further details and information in the coming weeks.

Update on Project. Apologies for the delay. We currently have two communities that have expressed interested in the Program they are Wudjal Wudjal and Doomadgee both of these isolated remote communities face similar issues as Aurukun. I have requested to meet with community leaders in both of these communities. Yesterday I also met with Indigenous Leader Nyunggai Warren Mundine OA and he has offered support and assistance. I have also spoken with Rotary Peace Scholar who is currently studying at the University of Queensland who is assisting us as well. It has been extremely challenging however we will not give up. Rest assured that I am totally committed to help bring this Peace Program to Indigenous Australia. I thank you for your patience and support IPDG Ida Portella

Rotarian Yolonde Entsch has just met with Doomadgee Shire Council Community Engagement officer Leonie Florence. Doomadgee is a remote aboriginal community located in the Gulf on the border of Queensland and the Northern Territory. Once council approves visit of Peace Scholar Shen, we will complete needs assessment and will re submit Australia Peace Project. We are committed to making this happen as we believe we can help bring peace to the lives of many living in these remote communities. I will provide another update on July 13. Yours in Rotary PDG Ida Portella

We have encountered a set back our Peace Scholar was taken ill and was unable to help, she is assisting in helping us find a replacement. We are still in contact with the Community of Doomadgee and are liaising with persons in the community who is interested in being our community contact. I have also made contact with Charles Allen Director of Partnership with the Institute of Economic and peace who has run various peace projects and has also offered assistance and advice. If the Districts are still ok to hang in there so will I thank you for your patience. Ida

Hello Fellow Rotarians, Firstly I must a apologies for not providing an update earlier. We have had a set back with the community of Doomadgee as the Mayor was arrested, which put the community in disarray. Since then I have been working with another group on an Indigenous peace project in Mareeba - Mareeba is the gateway to the Cape York and has a high indigenous population with many violence issues. I also have access to the community which will allow me to support it with no costs involved. We have started writing the new Global Grant and we hope to have it submitted to you all by end of February and it will be done by the end of this Rotary Year. It has been an extremely challenging process and I thank you all for being so patient. I keep being told to persist. cheers, Ida
