District Grant Final Report

District 5340

2024-25

Rotary Club: North County San Diego-Route 78

Project Title: Food for Single-ParentFamilies

Project Description

1. Describe the project. What was done, when and where did project activities take place?

Our club purchased food for single-parent low income struggling families in North County. Food is more expensive this year than last year so families were really feeling frustrated and anxious.

For each family, we purchased a turkey, fresh potatoes, beans, vegetables, cooking oil, boxes of macaroni, beans, rice, etc. so that each family could have enough food for a week. The families averaged 4 people. We delivered the boxes to public locations near where the families lived and they came to pick up their boxes. We delivered them in the two weeks BEFORE Thanksgiving and notified them about a month before that they would be receiving the food.

2. How many people benefited from this project? 28 families

3. Who were the beneficiaries, how were they impacted by this project, and what humanitarian need was met?

All of our club members can nominate single-parent families that they know who are really struggling now and since many of our members work in nonprofits they do personally know struggling families. Some of the families had received last year and some were new this year. EAch family expressed how much this meant to them -- that they wouldn't be able to have a Thanksgiving dinner without our donations. One family expressed their appreciation that we delivered the food early because the grandmother was dying and wasn't expected to live until Thanksgiving so they really wanted to have the dinner BEFORE Thanksgiving Day.

4. How many Rotarians participated in the project? 5

5. What did they do? Please give at least two examples, not including financial support provided to the project.

Some purchased the food, some boxed up the food, and some delivered the food to the families.

6. If a cooperating organization was involved, what was its role?

None
