The River City Disc Golf Course was originally constructed in 2011-12 by the River City Rotaract Club (now defunct). River City Rotaract was affiliated with the Soldotna Rotary Club.
At this point, the course needs some love. Target baskets have been sitting in the weather for 13 years. Several of them are damaged or leaning. Many of the tee areas are overgrown with brush, and several have downed trees blocking access. One basket was stolen. While the course is still popular, a number of holes aren't fully utilized due to the obstacles.
This project will repair and refurbish the existing course, and upgrade the tee areas to make the course more playable and enjoyable for disc golfers of all ages, levels and a with a wider range of abilities.
General course cleanup
• Clear existing tee areas
• Weed whacking "greens" around target baskets
• Limb downed trees 10 to 20 feet on each side of ski trail "fairways" for safer play
Refurbish target baskets
• Replace damaged basket parts
• Clean lichens and debris from targets, polish them up
• Re-pour cement/expanding foam to secure bases
Upgrade tee areas
• Install 6-by-14-foot gravel pads, topped with a rubber mat for better traction and easier maintenance
• Improve playability, attract more users
• Ensure tees are off of ski trails so they don't interfere with grooming/mowing operations.
• New signage for the welcome board and each tee
The project will begin with the clean-up portion in early summer. Tee construction is anticpated for late summer and fall, when funding to purchase materials is available. Rotarians will provide volunteer labor, organizational and logistical support. There will be ways for all ages and abilities to contribute.
