Project Description

Country: Kenya

Location: Shikunga

Total Budget: $32,749

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: Phase II of construction of medical clinic and purchase of equipment

For year 2020 - 2021, the North Platte Noon Rotary Club, along with several other District 5630 partnering Rotary Clubs and individual donors raised funds to build a medical clinic in the remote village of Shikunga, in western Kenya. This is the poorest area of that country and NP Rotarian Dr. Kim Baxter, who is an optometrist, has traveled to this village for two eye care missions (most recently with DGE Bob Mayber) and another time in conjunction with a $136,000 District 5630 Global Grant to provide updated equipment and medical training for the neonatal/maternity wing of the nearby Kakamega County Hospital.

The original budget for the clinic was approximately $24,000 plus additional dollars for equipment. However, after the plans were reviewed by an interdisciplinary team of medical professionals, it was determined that the clinic needed to be larger in order to accommodate laboratory, radiology and procedures. The new construction budget for the clinic is $60,000, which requires $22,600 in addition to the $37,400 reflected 2020-2021 grant, P-3511. The clinic will provide a wide variety of medical services to the impoverished people of that area, including eye care, dental and other medical care of various specialties. There are currently no such medical facilities or services available within a large area around Shikunga, so we know that many of the surrounding villages in this very poor, rural area of Kakamega County will be served by this new medical clinic we propose to build. The actual construction is scheduled to begin in June 2021. Construction is estimated to take eight months, depending on the impact of the rainy seasons.

Once the construction is complete, it will be necessary to purchase furnishings and medical equipment. Due to challenges with electrical requirements and maintenance, it has been determined that it would be best to purchase the majority of the equipment in Kenya. Donated equipment will be used as appropriate. The equipment budget of $50,000 is sufficient to cover the cost of shipping donated items. We also plan to establish a small foundation to provide ongoing funding for staffing, supplies, and maintenance of equipment to ensure long-term sustainability for this medical clinic.

See attached spreadsheet for itemized project costs.

Club members will be involved with fundraising, securing donated medical equipment and work on the clinic and within the village.
