Project Description

Country: El Salvador

Location: San Salvador

Total Budget: $3,000

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Maternal and child health, Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Improve nutrition, economy and life quality of 25 vulnerable families in El Salvador

Currently, 70% of El Salvador's population lives in poverty, a situation that has been which have been further exacerbated the COVID 19 pandemic, and has led to high rates of child malnutrition.

This project will target the two main problems that create this situation of poverty:

1-Families in El Salvador cannot cover the cost of the basic food basket because they are in poverty, but also because there is low food production in El Salvador and because farmers lack the knowledge and technology to diversify their crops.

2-Low awareness among the population about the importance of caring for the environment leads to actions that hurt the community's ability to provide for basic needs and protect the land that will produce more food.

To address these two needs, this project will last for 3 months and impact 25 families in rural communities across 12 of El Salvador's municipalities. There will be three components to the project:

1. Providing necessary seeds, chickens, and supplies to grow a home garden that provides a sustainable food source as well as a surplus that can be sold to generate income.

2. Encouraging care for the local environment by establishing families' participation in recycling programs, reforestation, waste separation, composting, and other practices.

3. Active community participation. In each community, a Support Community will be organized of leaders who are committed to improving family nutrition and caring for the environment.

We expect that the project will yield improved nutrition among the families, and an increase in the self-sufficiency, economic situation and quality of life for their communities. For this project we will partner with the OEF of El Salvador (oefes.org). OEF has been present in these communities for the last 12 years, implementing the Virtuous Circle of Accompaniment to provide initial and preschool education, support for formal education, support for employability, health, food production and environmental care. OEF will manage the financial support of national and international institutions to continue with food production actions in the impact zone, beyond the duration of this project.
