Summary: Improvement of rain water harvesting system used for watering crops that feed the impoverished people (25,000 approx.) living in Missionvale Care Center, Port Elizabeth, South Africa
The current water harvesting system in Missionvale Care Center is inadequate due to the extreme drought which Missionvale has experienced over the last few years. The situation has affected crop production due to scarcity of water. With an increase in water storage capacity with the improved system, the center could capture sufficient water during the rainy period to sustain the gardens during the drought period. This improvement will also enable the center to develop into a micro enterprise in addition to providing nutritional food to the Nutrition/Wellness unit at the center. The studies have already been done in consultation with their agricultural experts. The last phase of the project for which we are requesting funding will begin as soon as all funding is received for the piping and pumps. Members from our club have been working with the staff at Missionvale since 2008 with groups of Rotarians traveling there over the years to oversee the operation of the center. Another group from our club is planning a 2021 trip.
