Founded in 2004, Gamru Village School provides free education to poor, underserved children in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh in northern India. The school serves the children of the local community made up primarily of migrant workers. Many of these families cannot afford to send their children to the government schools because although the schools are tuition free, there are still some expenses including books and uniforms that they cannot afford. There is no cost to attend Gamru Village School. Only children from the poorest families are accepted at the school.
This grant will provide Gamru Village School students with the necessary equipment including devices and online access to ensure their learning can continue whether the physical school is open or closed. In the global Covid-19 environment, online study has become the only way for students to stay current with academic curriculum when schools are closed. The devoted teachers of Gamru Village School are doing their best to continue teaching in this unfortunate environment. Children of the village have been scrambling for borrowed time on cell phones owned by others in the community. This grant seeks to help level the playing field for these students who are already disadvantaged as a result of their poverty.
We will work with local Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Dharamsala in District 3070. Rotary Club of Del Mar and Rotary Club of Dharamsala have a close working relationship developed over many years of working on grants together.
