Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schools all across the country closed their doors and began providing distance learning for students. Fountain Valley School District dismissed their students on March 13, 2020, and the district has been working relentlessly to bring students back on campus for the fall of 2020. With the recent guidance that was provided by both the California Department of Public Health, as well as the California Department of Education, schools throughout California will be asking students, staff and parents to wear face coverings while on campus.
In speaking with the school district's leadership, they have determined that they will need approximately 60,000 face coverings to make it through the upcoming school year. With school beginning on September 9, 2020, it is important that the Rotary Club of Fountain Valley step in to help provide students with face coverings, also known as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
August 2020 - October 2020
Rotarians will be actively involved in the actual ordering, receiving, counting, packaging and distributing of approximately 100 face coverings for each of the 10 schools in the district.
The direct beneficiaries are the students, teachers, parents and community in Fountain Valley.
With schools being dismissed since March, student learning and our economy have been impacted significantly. Students must return to school in a safe way, and face coverings are recommended in both the CDPH's and CDE's guidance documents. Governor Newsom has made the return to school one of his highest priorities and Fountain Valley School District, as well as Fountain Valley Rotary Club are committed to helping to solve this problem.
This project provides some of the resources needed by the Fountain Valley School District to reopen schools this fall. The school district, as well as other community groups, similar to this project, must work together to ensure the health, safety and education of our students. The FV Rotary Club would like to be a part of that plan for the upcoming year, and continue to foster our ongoing relationship with the Fountain Valley School District.
Funds will be used to purchase over 1,000 cloth face coverings for students that are washable and can be used multiple times. Club members have worked with the school district to determine the appropriate masks to purchase, and we are working with two vendors to get the best price possible. All funds from this project will be handled by the Fountain Valley Rotary Club. Invoices and photos of the face coverings will be submitted in the final grant report.
Additional Comments:
Our economy must get up and running again. People need to get back to work, and to do that, students must be physically in school. In addition, there is strong evidence that the wearing of face coverings is significantly helping to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This project is one more way we can help to support our community through this pandemic.
