Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Fullerton

Total Budget: $1,500

Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Clean up of Fullerton Arboretum before the busy school tours.

This project supports a very successful event that benefits the kids of Fullerton. Our community partners help us achieve our Rotary goals and we want to return the favor in the form of a grant.

The Fullerton Arboretum is a nonprofit organization that hosts every elementary school in Fullerton, and the surrounding areas, year round. Kids learn about nature through various gardens, ponds, tours, and learning labs. This facility maximizes its annual calendar to accommodate the various schools, groups, and 1,000s of kids. The Arboretum schedules a major clean-up the last weekend in September to prepare for their busy school year. Our project is a Community Clean-Up at the Fullerton Arboretum.

Immediate needs for the Arboretum before October 2020 (Actual date still pending due to Covid):

• General Clean up

• Mulching and raking of leaves

• Garbage collection, disposal

• Tend to plants, water gardens

• Prepare the grounds for tours

This year, we will invite three youth groups to join at least 5 Rotarians in completing the clean-up: Fullerton Service League of Boys (S.L.O.B.S.), Fullerton High School Boys Basketball, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Fullerton Keystone Leaders. Rotarians will pick up trash, mulch, and rake leaves. This will alleviate menial duties from the Arboretum staff and they can focus their resources in other more pressing areas. Each youth group will be appreciated through a $500 award to their organization ($1,500 total).

Lasting Impact:

The community cleanup will help prepare the Arboretum for its busy school year schedule of hosting 1,000s of kids from the local area. This cleanup will leave a lasting impact until the next scheduled cleanup.
