Project Description Country: USA Location: Cheyenne, Wyoming Total Budget: $3,000 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: General Summary: Provide no cost software code online instruction to 160 students in Wyoming. JavaScript for Wyoming, training our Coders for the future. The Array School of Technology and Design, established in 2016, is Wyoming's first private accelerated technology and design school. The curriculum and classroom culture are designed to take any age or experience and transform them into professional full-stack web developers. The students learn computer coding, computer science fundamentals, and graphic design. The Array team was instrumental in passing Computer Science Standards for K-12 schools in Wyoming in 2018 and was able to partner with Girls Who Code, a national organization, to offer computer coding to young girls in Wyoming. This course is free, started in January 2020, and lasts for 15 weeks. Array has also created JavaScript online, (JavaScript for Wyoming) a self-paced video program for all children grades 7-12. This course is more advanced for the students who are passionate about JavaScript and is the next step in this unique, skills training by distance learning opportunity. JavaScript for Wyoming will be offered free to students around the State of Wyoming for the 2020-2021 to learn and explore JavaScript code from where they attend school or live. This course is designed for students grades 7-12 who have a foundation of basic programming such as Scratch, who would like to further learn computer science knowledge, specifically in JavaScript. The course is a self-paced, online curriculum with activities that reinforce learning. Array Apprentices and staff will be available as mentors to students who have issues with content or exercises to ensure competency. Array will provide further curriculum development and supplies related to the content at their own expense. Array will also provide all marketing and advertising and handle application communication with students. Finally, Array will conduct background checks and training on any staff/volunteers that associate with the children. The grant request is for $3,000 to provide mentorship to the children who require assistance and for marketing of the program to include handouts, posters, and social media pushes to create the most awareness possible for students. Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed) Rotary participation: Rotarian's will "help Array spread the word" about the program by personal calls to computer and science teaching staff and in collaboration with Array developing posters and handouts to target schools across the state. They will also develop a program about JavaScript for Wyoming to present via Zoom to clubs in the target communities to increase awareness of the innovative distance learning program and encourage members to support and possibly participate as local mentors if those skills are present. Array school of Technology and Design has completed the online curriculum and finalized the web page for use by students. By the end of this week a press release will be distributed to the media and Wyoming schools about the coding school. By the beginning of November Rotary Club of Cheyenne members will assist with the distribution of information and invitation to participate by direct contact with Club members in targeted towns and cities, essentially towns with schools and clubs. This will be a self paced program of instruction, Array will be providing reports of participation and accomplishments on a quarterly basis through next spring. 16-Mar-21 by Brent Lathrop Advertisement of the Array Coding School opportunity took place at an accelerated pace in October through December. Rotarian's used print, web, email, radio and television to "spread the word." 35 students and instructors enrolled in the self paced course from about 9 different towns and cities around Wyoming. The program is about completed and there is talk about doing it again. The partnership with Array and the online Coding school was a success and was the right investment and support by Rotary at right time in consideration of the COVID impact on education for 2020-2021. The Coding school was also a pilot by Array to establish and refine how to reach out to high school students in particular and build a program that would encourage success by the enrollee.
