Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Pocatello

Total Budget: $6,320

Area of Focus: Community economic development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Renovate & Improve picnic shelter and add a drinking fountain.

Our project at Taysom Rotary Park in Pocatello, Idaho is to renovate & improve the existing stage/picnic shelter and to install an ADA-compliant drinking fountain with dog fountain. Rotarians will do all repair, improvement and painting of the stage/picnic shelter. The project will begin in late Summer 2020 and be completed in Spring 2021. Our purpose is to attract increased community use of the park by making it a better facility and to improve the structure to reduce future maintenance needed.

The City of Pocatello Parks & Rec Dept. has agreed to assist in this project by 1) extending the needed water line and providing a concrete pad for installation of the fountain adjacent to the stage/picnic shelter, and 2) installing new picnic tables at the shelter.

UPDATE July 24, 2020 -- Gate City Rotary Club will continue its financial commitment to this project in the amount of $3,014. Additional DDF funds allocated to this project will be used to upgrade the fountain/dog fountain purchased for the project to a better quality with bottle filler that will be powder coated to match the color of the new picnic tables installed at the shelter. The line item for rental tools and miscellaneous was increased slightly to absorb possible additional expenses.

In mid-November 2020, the water line was extended in the park and the drinking fountain with dog fountain was installed in agreement with the City of Pocatello Parks Department. Plans are in place to complete this project in either April 2021 or August 2021 to coordinate with needed Rotarians with skills to complete the project. A final report will be submitted at the time of completion.

This is a reminder to provide an updated progress report by May 15, 2021 reporting on the status of the project. If it is completed, the final report is due. Late report or no report may result in the club losing eligibility for a grant in 2021-22. If you need help, contact Ines Crespo, ines@glassinbalance.com or (208) 320-8494.

Work intended to be completed in April 2021 has been delayed. Our Club understands that since the project will not be completed by May 2021 that we will not be eligible for the next District Grant in 2021. In consultation with Pocatello Parks and Recreation, it may be that improvements may need to be altered as a result of the increase in building material costs. If the project scope has to be significantly altered, we will consult with District Grant representatives. Project completion in August 2021 is still anticipated.

Our club was not able to complete this project during the summer construction season. Oli Devaud has spoken with the Pocatello Parks Dept and has arranged to outline the project to be completed during the summer 2022 construction season. As noted previously, if the cost of materials remains higher than budgeted, the project scope may have to be changed.

We're approaching the 2 year mark on this grant. Your previous history log stated you were hopeful to have the work completed in the summer of 2022. Is it possible to get the work done in April 2022? Your completed project and final report are due May 15, 2022. Please reach out to District Grants Chair, Ines Crespo, at ines@glassinbalance.com or 208-320-8494 with any questions.

On March 26 and April 2, Gate City Rotary club members did carpentry work to repair this picnic shelter and stripped the wood shakes off the shelter roof. With building material cost increases, purchasing plywood to make repairs initially planned was not possible. It was decided to replace rotten portions of the structure and re-roof the shelter with metal roofing to match the color of picnic tables. The next work party is scheduled for April 30. Roofing will be ordered next week and it is hopeful that this project can be completed by mid-May in order to file a closing report.
