Project Description Country: USA Location: Kemmerer Total Budget: $2,000 Areas of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention, Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Peace: General Summary: Four 'Buddy Benches' with books for Canyon Elementary. In Lincoln County School District #1, we have had to combine two schools into one. Our Kindergarten through 3rd grade has moved over and joined our 4th grade through 6th grade school. This has created a need for more playground equipment for our Kindergarten through 6th grade. Our local PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) has been doing many fundraisers around the community to raise money for this project. Currently there is not enough playground equipment to meet the needs of the doubled population. The Kemmerer Rotary Club wants to help with this project because we know the importance of recess and of having students get outside and play during the day. We met with the PTO President and she suggested "Buddy Benches". These "Buddy Benches" come with a program and books that help children that feel alone find a friend. This can teach children how to help each other out and to work together to build a better future. The "Buddy Benches" are $500.00 a piece. We know this grant is a 2 to 1 match for a total of $1500.00. The Kemmerer Rotary Club received a $500.00 award for our Literacy Project last year. We would like to put that award towards this project. The great thing about this project is that the Kemmerer Rotary Club will get to present the "Buddy Benches" to the students and introduce the program to the students. The Club will also get to help with the installation of the "Buddy Benches".
