Cheyenne Rotary After Hours would like to continue our 2nd. grade literacy project. If approved, this will be our third consecutive year providing reading/activity books to second graders in the southern triad of Laramie County School District 1 (other triads of the district are being covered by another Rotary club in Cheyenne). 1-2 club members per school will go to the second grade classes for 10-15 minutes and along with promoting literacy, help teach the students about the 4-Way Test. Each student then gets to keep her/his own reading/activity book which is called "Andy and Elmer's Apple Dumpling Adventure". From years past, the classrooms now each have their own stay-in-the-class reading book for the teachers to use, and each school's library now also has a hardcover version of the book. Therefore, the only thing needed to purchase annually are the softcover books for the students. Once funding is secured, we will then order the books and coordinate with the schools on dates on when members of Cheyenne Rotary After Hours can read to/interact with the students. We will strive to do this later in the school year (usually May), as we have found the teachers are sometimes looking for curriculum to fill out the school year, so it turns out to be a win-win situation for all involved. We have 37 books left over from last year, and using last year's numbers there are 439 second graders that we will be purchasing books for. Therefore we are looking to purchase 402 books (6 cartons with 72 books/per carton and each carton is $180). $180 X 6 cartons of books = $1080. Shipping = $20/carton = $120. Total budget: $1200.
