This grant is for Phase II of the club's Community Garden Project. Phase I consisted of purchasing a 2500 gallon water storage tank. Phase I ended in May, 2019. Phase II began on July 1, 2019 and consists of purchasing drip irrigation supplies, public benches, potting shed, shade trees and signage. There is an ongoing need in our community to lean how to plant and maintain a healthy garden so that our citizens in need can supplement their fresh food supply. When complete, our project will be a facility where people can learn to grow their own food in their own backyards. Members of the Rotary Club of Iowa Park will obtain and utilize a plot of vacant land within the City of Iowa Park to create this community garden. The garden will consist of a series of raised beds as well as traditional in-ground beds to be utilized by individuals, families, and other organizations within the community. The purpose of the garden is two-fold: First, it will help supplement the fresh food supply of those in need; secondly, it will provide a healthy outdoor activity for each gardener while simultaneously providing horticultural education. Secondly, it will provide an opportunity to improve the beautification of the garden area with appropriate landscaping and public conveniences. Budgetary needs are for the purchase of drip irrigation supplies, public benches, shade trees, and signage. Estimated cost of public benches, shade trees and signage is $2925.
