Project Description Country: USA Location: Vermillion Total Budget: $13,500 Area of Focus: Community economic development Activity Type: Community Development: General Summary: Design and creation of three plaques recognizing medal honor winners with historical connection to the Vermillion community. Several years ago, the USD Student Veterans organization pointed out that the campus lacked a proper U.S. flag display. At the same time, prominent USD alumnus Gary Conradi mentioned that with three Medal of Honor recipients among its alumni, the USD campus has no official recognition of the honor bestowed on the late Jose Foss, WWII Marine pilot and governor of SD; Arlo Olson, WWII Army officer killed in Italy in 1943 and George "Bud" Day, Air Force pilot in Vietnam held prisoner in Hanoi and escaped twice. In addition to honoring these three heroes, the timing of the Patriots Project recognizes the service of other veterans among the extended USD family. Finally, the Patriots Project recognizes the centennial of Army ROTC at USD. The Patriots Plaza is a community memorial park being placed on the USD campus as a community collaboration. The dedication for the complete project is planned for Veteran's Day 2021 (November 11, 2021). Presently, a Vermillion Rotary Club member is the chair of the project steering committee (another Rotarian is also on the committee), a Vermillion Rotarian will be providing the flags that will be displayedat the plaza, and another Vermillion Rotarian runs the business that will be carving five service symbol crests.
