The quarterly Thousand Smiles Clinic in Ensenada changes lives one smile at a time by providing free maxillofacial surgery, dental treatments and related health care to children from financially challenged families in Mexico. The clinic is completely managed and run by volunteers; and it takes many volunteers to run it. During the February 2020 clinic, El Centro Rotary will provide lunch on Friday and Saturday for the many dedicated volunteers.
Four to six Rotarians are required to organize and supply the 150 +/- meals at an approximate cost of $1,000. In addition to the $1,000 for food and supplies, other travel expenses include motel accommodations for two nights and gas. Motel accommodations are provided at a discounted group rate of approximately $60/night/room; and are relatively inexpensive to encourage more volunteers to participate. Three rooms would be required each night for the six Rotarians with two people sharing a room. Ensenada, Mexico is approximately 150 miles one way or 300 miles round-trip.
