Medical care in this region is impaired by the lack of access to electricity. Vaccines cannot be stored for use and results of lab samples cannot reliably be preserved for testing.
This laboratory in Fiervil, Haiti will improve the capability of local health care providers to limit the spread of communicable diseases,reduce the incidence and complicatons from non-communicable diseases, reduce the mortality rate for children under age 5 as well as reduce the maternal mortality rate.
This is an effort of the Vassar Haiti Project, which began in 2001 and which has partnered with the host club, Poughkeepsie-Arlington in District 7210 and the Memorial des Gonaives Rotary Club in Haiti, successfully since then. thehaitiproject.org.
With the host and international clubs, partners are Vassar College Rotoract, District 7210; and the Rotary Clubs of Damariscotta, Maine; East Fishkill, NY; Millbrook, NY; Peekskill, NY; Pleasant Valley, NY; Walden, NY; and Walden, NY. Project funds are for the purchase of construction equipment, laboratory equipment, and the hiring of a lab technician.
Peekskill Rotary has supported the Haiti Project in previous years and has funded it in Rotary year 2018-19 in the amount of $2500. We don't anticipate that any club members will be directly involved although there is one member with a personal connection to this project, which initially spurred our interest.
As of May 2019, all but $8,000 had been raised of the $126,000 total budget. Budget details can be provided.
