Name of Project: Campo de Fe is a hospice for men in Tijuana, Mexico. It was established in 1998 by Flor Morales. It is a home for men who are injured or dying and have no family or resources.
Brief Description of Project: To reroof and improve an existing adjacent structure which is unusable in its present condition. The roof leaks and the broken windows do not offer any protection during the cold, wet months. Presently it is an unusable chilly damp room. We would also create a door between the adjoining dormitory and install a pot belly stove. Wood is a cheap and easily acquired commodity.
Explain the benefits of this project and who it will assist: Building a warm space would allow the men to have an area outside of their dormitory where they could gather. From time to time they receive visitors and it would be nice to have a meeting place apart from the communal bedroom. Many of the men are very sick and it is not always suitable for visitors to be present in the dormitory.
Campo de Fe has beds for 18 men. There are presently 14 men but this varies from week to week. Flor has had hundreds of men stay over the last twenty years. Many have died under her care instead of on the streets of Tijuana. Campo de Fe exists because of donations. No one pays for their stay at Campo de Fe and no one is turned away.
