Summary: Improving the appearance and useability of the outdoor space at Interfaith Good Samaritan's new building in Laramie, WY.


nterfaith-Good Samaritan (Interfaith) in Laramie, Wyoming was founded July 1, 1988 and is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing emergency assistance primarily in the form of food and needed funds.

For over 30 years, Interfaith has been helping their neighbors, primarily families, from being evicted or having their utilities shut off when their funds are temporarily insufficient to pay rent or utility bills; and also by providing a food pantry that distributes over 1,000 pounds of food each week.

The Interfaith operation is in the process of relocating to a new facility which is a tremendous improvement over the past location. The new facility is all on the ground level as opposed to three levels in the old location. The new location offers easy close-in parking and improved access for donors, volunteers, clients, families and individuals seeking assistance. However, some landscape improvement work is needed. The facilities at the new Interfaith location were used by the previous occupant for a different purpose and the landscaping around the building was not maintained for outdoor uses.

Interfaith plans to use the outdoor space as a welcoming area for their clients as well as a waiting area for those using buses or waiting for the food pantry to open. To accomplish this and to insure public safety two trees will be removed and other trees will be trimmed. In addition the designated waiting/welcoming area will be equipped with two benches and flagstone pavement.

A small group of Rotarians and Interfaith representatives have met and developed plans for what work needs to be accomplished. Professional cost estimates for some of the work have been secured. One Rotary family has already donated 20 large flagstones to be used for the outdoor waiting area. Three others have donated $600 in cash to facilitate getting this project done. The Sunrise Rotary Club is allocating $1900 for a total contribution of $2500. This District Grant application is seeking $5000 from District 5440 to complete the acquisition of funds needed. Work will begin in the summer of 2019 but the project will likely carry over into the early summer of 2020.

The funds would be used to pay a professional tree service to remove and trim some of the existing trees and to purchase two commercial-quality park benches. Members of the Sunrise Rotary club would then organize volunteers to lay out the design, remove sod, install the flagstones, and install the benches. A "monument" sign will be located near the street to help individuals find the new building.
