Country: USA

Location: Lemont

Total Budget: $1,000

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: RI Youth Programs (Youth Exchange, RYLA, Rotaract, Interact)

Summary: Lemont/Homer Glen club will assist the Lemont Early Act club in providing nutritional meals for the disadvantaged through Feed My Starving Children. The grant will provide for the buses and incidentals for the children to attend the event.

Feed My Starving Children is a Christian non-profit organization that coordinates the packaging and distribution of food to people in developing nations. Founded in 1987, it has reached out to more than 70 countries.

The Early Act Club is helping to bring the Rotary message to our youth and community. Early Act is providing leadership and community responsibility training for our elementary school students. The total cost of supporting our Early Act group and funding The Feed My Starving Children event is $1000. The Feed My Starving Children event emphasizes the global community and their needs. The students have participated in: Fundraising for Shelter Box, Letters to Our Troops, Random Acts of Kindness Day, and tree planting in the community.

The club will also partner with our local high school Interact club who can assist in volunteering service hours with the Early Act. The opportunity to partner with both the Early Act club and our Interact club will promote further collaboration among local clubs and will provide us great opportunities to further generate Rotary and Interact club awareness in our community.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

Due to Covid-19 crisis, we are unable to complete the final part of our grant from 2019-2020 which was to send our Early Act and Interact group to a Feed My Starving Children event. Following consent from DRFC Rachel Ossyra, the funds will be repurposed to our food pantries for Covid-19 response. Matching club funds are not required for the Covid-19 response projects.

The Shelter Box was set up at River Valley School and students from RiverValley and Oakwood were presented with information about the Shelter Box. In the past three years the students have been able to sponsor three Shelter Boxes per year. Unfortunately, this year school closed before the fundraising could begin.

We advertised our contributions to the food pantry through facebook and were able to secure some matching funds from local business, OSCO oil. We also participated in Miles 2gether in 2020. Members purchase a T-shirt, walked 2 miles, and posted a picture of them wearing the T-shirt. Proceed benefited the local food pantries and Hope and Friendship which supports Lemont families.
