Project Description Country: USA Location: Leyden Township, IL Total Budget: $21,000 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Education: Scholarship Summary: Scholarships for graduating students of Leyden High School District 212 from disadvantaged or low-income families Each year the Rotary Club of Chicago-O'Hare through its foundation provides five to eight scholarships, each valued at $3,500, to graduating students of Leyden High School District 212 to assist them in attending an approved college, university or vocational school. Students complete an extensive application and are evaluated based on several criteria including how well they have demonstrated traits that reflect the ideals of Rotary and their financial need (most applicants come from low-income families and are faced with paying for college by themselves). Applications are reviewed by a committee made up of Club members and a shortlist of finalists is determined. The shortlisted students are then interviewed by the committee. Winners are notified in mid-March. For each winner the scholarship are paid directly to the school being attended and is split between the first two semesters.
