Project Description

Country: USA

Location: South Dakota

Total Budget: $2,500

Areas of Focus: Peace and conflict prevention/resolution, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Peace: General

Summary: Host a group of Aboriginal Leaders from Australia and help them make connections with Native American Leaders

Phase 1 of this project will support the District 9700 proposal to send a delegation of young indigenous Australian professionals to District 5610 to experience a different indigenous culture and to share experiences and connections to demonstrate the way Rotary works towards building understanding, peace and vocational excellence.

Phase 2 of this project will be to send counterpart Native Tribal Americans to Australia to mirror the experience of the Phase 1 Aboriginal Australians. This request will address only phase 1, support to the Australian delegation in District 5610.

The Australians will fully fund their team's travel. We will have hosting duties of housing, transportation, and networking connections.

The Native American leaders in Omniceye Rotary, Cheyenne River Youth Project (CRYP), Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies (CAIRNS), Oglala Lakota College, and a number of other organizations will be consulted to provide personal connections.

After District 9700 has identified the Australian participants and coordinator, the District 5610 coordinator will help facilitate email and other electronic contacts between the Australian coordinator and team members and potential Native American projects in District 5610. While the focus will be on the Oglala Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and the urban Native community of Rapid City, the Australian delegation will be offered a weeklong tour and overview of seven tribal nations and the

three major urban Native American centers, hosted by District 5610 Rotary clubs.

Following this tour, the Australian participants will spend a week on Pine Ridge Reservation and/or in Rapid City focused on vocational projects in which they have interest and are involved in their Aboriginal communities in Australia. If during the weeklong tour, one or more participants prefer to have an experience on one of the other eight tribal reservations or urban American Indian communities, every effort will be made to match them to their desired project and community.

Participation in Spring 2020 District 5610 conference with a special session on the experiences of the Australian guests will be included.

The GSE team will attend Rotary meetings as opportunities present during location in all areas.

This grant will support hosting expenses for the Australian GSE team not covered by their grant.

Phase I of Group Study Exchange between D9700 in New South Wales, Australia and D5610 in United States, has begun. In September Tom Katus toured PDG Micheal Milston to several Native American reservations and Rotary clubs to plan the exchange route. A team is being recruited in New South Wales of aboriginal background. The hosting of this team is planned for April 2020, culminating at the District Conference.

A check for $2500 from the DDF account has been deposited in a checking account at Pioneer Bank in Rapid City, controlled by PDG Linda Peterson.

A meeting of DG Ina Winter, PDG Linda Peterson, and Tom Katus was held on November 15, 2019 to plan next steps. Tom is refining the route plan. Linda and Tom are writing application text and publicity. Ina is recruiting donors.
