Summary: Matching Grant for Student Scholarship

This is a scholarship district grant request to assist Elisa Cink to attend University next Fall. Her desired field of study is Global Health/Biochemistry.

Here is her essay on the six areas of focus: Global Health.

"My most meaningful achievement has been completing my International Baccalaureate (IB) extended essay. The extended essay (EE) is a requirement of the IB program where students spend eight months independently researching a topic and writing a 4000-word essay. This was a challenge I set my self up for when I decided to attend Journeys for the IB program. Growing up in Southern Africa I was able to witness the value of an IB education and I knew that I was ready for the challenge the program would bring.

When the time came to begin the EE I knew I wanted to research a topic in Global Health. After spending the last two summers volunteering in public hospitals in Uganda and the Dominican Republic I knew I was interested in understanding a health topic that was affecting the world. My research question was: what factors affect the high prevalence of antibiotic resistance (AMR) bacteria in South Africa? Beginning the research and writing process was daunting, especially because IB does not allow students to have more than six hours of help from an advisor. However, I jumped into the research excited to learn more about a topic that intrigued me. I taught myself how to efficiently research a vast scientific topic, collaborated with a local travel doctor, and interviewed a scientist from South Africa. Another challenge the EE made me face was finding the time to work on it. With homework, extracurriculars, college applications, test prep, and a job I had to become a master at time management in order to complete my EE.

Fortunately, through all the hard work I was able to distinguish that what contributes to AMR in South Africa are the countries economic, environmental, and socio-cultural factors. After the essay was completed came the part of the EE that pushed me out of my comfort zone the most. I had to give a presentation defending my EE and answering questions for 30 minutes in front of my entire high school. Although it was terrifying while giving my presentation, I realized how much I had discovered about AMR in South Africa and I felt proud of myself for all that I had learned over the eight months.

Completing my EE made me realize my passion for global health. The EE strongly influenced my decision to apply to schools with a global health program. For the future, I hope to continue research in global health topics in order to discover solutions to global health problems."

She is accepted to the following schools with the respective tuition costs:

Tufts University - $73,500

University of Vermont - $53,392

Georgetown University - $71,490

Northeastern University - $68,177

Boston University -$65,906

Ms. Cink's father is diseased and her mother was recently laid off from work due to a reduction in workforce at her employment at ADCS Western Wyoming.
