Little Susitna Park
Installation of "Kids Don't Float" life jacket loaner board, along with "Josh the Baby Otter" water safety material on the parcel of land owned by the City of Houston, Ak. This is the same parcel of land that our club historically uses to end our annual "Little Su Classic" river clean up event and get out of our kayaks and canoes. Due to the nature of the riverbank in this area, we have encountered numerous capsizes, endangering volunteers. This project will create a family friendly place to safely launch canoes, kayaks, and rafts. This project will not allow vehicle access, and will not be suitable for powered boat traffic. The project will be accomplished during the next 3 years, phase one is to prep the land, build a simple 20ft x 20ft open air pavilion of pressure treated common lumber to protect the water safety interpretive material erect and erect the Kids Don't Float kiosk.
The scope of the work for this season:
Cut down trees in area between parking lot and Parks Highway
Pull stumps and level ground, compact gravel
Build forms and pour concrete
Construct pavilion
This area would give a safe, family friend place for gathering, with life jackets available. The whole Mat Su Valley would benefit, and the work would be done by Susitna Rotary Rotarians. Work will be completed by by June 1 2020.
