Auke Lake Shelter

History Logs

Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Juneau

Total Budget: $32,000

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: Construction/Renovation

Summary: The 4 Juneau Rotary Clubs and Rotaract will build a picnic shelter at Auke Lake in Juneau, Alaska

What needs have been identified

The Juneau Parks and Recreation Department and the Alaska department of Transportation and Pubic Facilities have been working on upgrading the Auke Lake Wayside for the past 15 years. The wayside is a connection point for the Auke Lake trail and access to the lake. The parking lot, boat launch and connector trail along glacier highway and the bridge to UAS have all been completed. The picnic shelter and restrooms are the last items to be completed.

Auke Lake is one of only two road side accessible fresh water lakes in Juneau. The lake is surrounded with private homes, the UAS campus and Parks and Recreation land. The wayside is used for parking for both use of the lake and the lake trail. Having a picnic shelter at the lake would provide opportunity for the public to enjoy the lake in a way they can't currently.

This project would complete the Picnic Shelter located adjacent to the lake. This project would be done in partnership with the Juneau Park Foundation, the Juneau Community Foundation, and Juneau Parks and Recreation.

The four Rotary Clubs of Juneau and Rotaract Club propose to contribute to this effort together. Each club will take a leadership role in insuring the success of this project.

• The Juneau Gastineau Rotary Club will initiate project organization and will be a liaison between the Rotary Clubs and community leadership and writing of the grant.

• The Juneau Glacier Valley Rotary Club will structure the financial and report keeping as part of the grant stewardship.

• The Juneau "Downtown" Rotary Club and Juneau 58' Innovators will organize the volunteers and work efforts.

All club's will also donate funds towards the project.

How the project will meet those needs

By combining the resources of Juneau Rotary clubs we will be able to build the long envisioned picnic shelter. This would leave only the bathrooms to complete.

Timeline for your project

Given the weather and school schedule the plan is to complete the trail by the end of September. To meet this schedule, we have the following project timeline:

• April 30, 2019: Receive notice of Grant Funding

• July 2019: Shelter Kit ordered from supplier, site preparation work party

• August/September 2019: Construction of picnic shelter

What the project funds will use for

•Design/Permitting, CBJ project Administration, other contigencies

How many club members will be involved

We propose 30% club membership from each club.
