Project Description Country: Mexico Location: Baja Peninsula, Mexico Total Budget: $8,000 Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment Activity Type: Health: Volunteer Services Summary: This grant will provide funding for the purchase of a Nomad Portable Dental X-Ray unit for aiding the surgeons and dentists working with the Cleft Palate dental population. Thousands of Children afflicted with facial cleft lip and palate deformities currently are receiving surgical care for their needs through the work of the Rotary District 5340 Rotary-Smiles International Foundation projects. The children's teeth must be imaged by X-ray technology in order to make decisions of their position within the bony cleft for bone grafting risk as well as dental disease. Sometimes, this decision needs to be made in a clinic that does not have the installation of a permanent Xray unit due to the indigent nature of the population of the mission site. The purchase made with this MG project will allow the dentists and surgeons to obtain the X-ray images immediately on site with minimal risk of radiation exposure to both the patient and the clinician allowing versatile mobility of the unit which can be used even while working within the operating room should the need arise.
