Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Anchorage, AK

Total Budget: $10,000

Area of Focus: Peacebuilding and conflict prevention

Activity Type: Peace: Volunteer Services

Summary: Two to three FBI designed and monitored laptops, and training for cyberteam volunteers of 'Love Alaska/Priceless' to work to identify and rescue women who are being trafficked in Alaska via the dark web.

Priceless currently has a Cyber Team who is online searching for trafficking victims who are being bought and sold in digital spaces. This team is using technology that is normally used for nefarious purposes, to find and potentially rescue victims. This team has some unique technology needs and these funds will go to provide the laptops needed to perform anti-trafficking work online. The work of the Cyber Team is crucial in identifying and finding potential trafficking victims online. This work also requires specialized education and training to understand the world of online trafficking, how to search and locate individuals, and what the process is for documenting what its found. This training equips the team to serve in this way. The time frame for laptop purchase and training is calendar year 2019, which will involve Rotarians from Anchorage East and other clubs.

This project originally began as a grant request to help fund the cost of purchasing specially designed laptops to help a trained cyber team proactively combat human trafficking in Alaska. Due to the impact of Covid, it became unclear if the company designing and building the computers would be able to stay in business and fulfill the commissioned computers. Due to the unknown future of the company, the timing of funds being released for district grants, and the ongoing need for basic essentials to be provided for human trafficking victims, the focus of the grant pivoted to fund basic essentials and has tabled the request for cyber team funding.
