Summary: Roof Replacement for Mulege Rotary Health Clinic which provides health care for Muleginos.
The Mulege Rotary Health Clinic has been in service for about 40 years. Thousands of local Mexicans who cannot afford medical care have benefitted from the care provided here in form of dental, eye, and dermatology. Our building and property is Rotary owned and managed. But the roof has severe termite damage and cannot last another season. In addition, our electrical needs upgrading and the ceilings and ceiling light fixtures need to be replaced, and paint damage repaired. We have put the project out to bid with local contractors and the price works out to be $25,000. Our timeline is to replace the roof at the end of the current season, starting in late summer and be finished no later than December 2019. Rotary members will assist in demolition, painting, and clean up. This Health Clinic is vital to the region. This season alone has seen Mexicans travel 60 miles or more to utilize our facility. A group of students recently traveled from the Pacific side by bus, staying in a overnight, and being seen by the dentist the next morning before boarding the bus to travel back to their homes. Services are provided for a small $100 peso donation, but those who cannot afford this don't have to pay anything. But by asking for a small donation, the locals are invested in their care and treatment and take pride in being able to pay. Most of our patients come because they cannot afford dental care and yet have dire needs. A young man came into our clinic this morning with an impacted wisdom tooth and in great pain. He walked away from the difficult extraction with a smile on his face and so relieved to have the problem resolved. Another patient today, a rancher who drove 2 hours on dusty bumpy dirt roads from his ranch in the mountains, had been in pain for months. He received a root canal and was so grateful. He gave us a bag of his organic garlic bulbs, of which he was very proud to have grown. These are the kind of people we are helping. Our Mulege Rotary Health Clinic is staffed by Rotarians and licensed International Volunteers who give of their time, and often their money, to make this Clinic continue to be a success. With a new roof, the future is bright to continue our efforts to serve the people of Mulege and beyond.

The Mulege Rotary Club has selected the contractor to replace the Mulege Rotary Health Clinic Roof. Sergio Sinuhe Santos Miranda of Santos Construction RFC, has been awarded the contract. The selection process began in with preliminary bids being received from 7 contractors. All contractors were locally based. Each contractor had to possess the ability to provide a factura, had substantial background in metal roof construction and conform to all Mexican construction laws for commercial construction. Presently, members of the Mulege Rotary Club are boxing up all the supplies, medicine, etc. to be moved into storage during the remodeling process. The Construction on the roof is scheduled to begin on Nov. 1, 2019 and be completed by Dec. 15, 2019.

The contractor continues to shop the best prices for material and accumulate all that is needed for the project. Prices are increasing rapidly in Baja so it is necessary to purchase what will be needed early to work within the bid. We are still scheduled to completely empty the Clinic in October by Mulege Rotarians and volunteers in preparation for the removal of the old roof commencing November 1st (when hurricane season is officially over).

Construction has begun! The last 2 weeks of October, Rotarians emptied the clinic of supplies and furniture. The demolition of the roof began October 29. The roof is now almost completed. The project is ahead of schedule with an anticipated completion date of December 1st. Then new electrical will be installed as well as updating the plumbing, which is being done by Rotarians. We will also be installing air conditioning. In January, we will be painting and hopefully installing new tile on the floor as well. We are now getting donations from many folks in the area to help us complete this project as during the demolition, additional problems were discovered that need to be addressed, especially in the electrical department. Pictures are posted to show the progress.
