Project Description

Country: USA

Location: San Diego

Total Budget: $1,000

Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water and sanitation

Activity Type: Water: Sanitation

Summary: More than 1500 Water Pasteurization Indicators (WAPIs) provided to communities in need of clean water around the world (e.g. Haiti, Kenya, Uganda).

Many communities around the world lack access to clean, drinkable water. People in these communities would greatly benefit from WAPIs, which are devices that indicate when water has reached pasteurization temperature, allowing people to save time and resources when purifying water. In regions with limited access to clean water, most people pasteurize their water via boiling. However, this is not necessary, as the pasteurization temperature is lower than the boiling point of water. Rather than use additional fuel and spend additional time boiling water, people can be sure their water is safe to drink by using WAPIs. Most people in these communities cannot afford to buy WAPIs, so our club, in collaboration with Solar Cookers International, aims to donate 1500 water pasteurization indicators (WAPIs) to communities in Haiti and Kenya. In February of 2019, our club will host WAPI Project at the University of California, San Diego, which is an annual event attended by more than a hundred Rotaractors, Rotarians, and Interactors. We expect around 150 people to attend next year's WAPI Project. At WAPI Project, we will assemble and test WAPIs, which will be later distributed to communities in Haiti and Kenya with the help of Solar Cookers International. The requested $1000 will go towards purchasing approximately 1500 WAPI assembly kits.

This year's WAPI Project will take place on March 10, 2019 from 2-5 PM in the UCSD Multipurpose Room. We are awaiting approval from District 5340. We were notified by Belgico Crespo of District 5340 that we would receive the funds for WAPI Project, but are waiting for Mel Gallegos to approve the grant. Mel was accidentally added as a signatory, would it be possible that he be removed from the list?
