Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Chicago, Il

Total Budget: $16,000

Areas of Focus: Peace and conflict prevention/resolution, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Peace: General

Summary: Teaching art and peace through art; partnership with uchicago; multiple 3rd grade classes

Continuation of 6 year partnership with university of Chicago & smart museum to teach concepts of peace through art lessons. The funds will be used to cover actual expenses of the smart museum in conducting the program - docents and art teachers, bus trips, art supplies and the like. Smart museum contributes some of the services. The program consists of an initial visit to the smart museum to learn what an art museum is, followed by 8 in school art lessons with a practicing artist as the teacher. The lessons include concepts of peace while at the same time promoting intellectual development not available with strict "book education." at the end, there is another visit to the smart museum. Approximately 200 3rd grade students will participate. It is expected that 10-20 rotarians from 4 clubs will be actively involved as classroom assistants, chaperones at museum, and in behind the scenes program development. The student involvement will start in the fall of 2018 and be completed by may, 2019.
