Project Description

Country: India

Location: Dharamsala, HP

Total Budget: $3,500

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Provide furniture, equipment, uniforms and some operating funds for students in Dharamsala, India.

Please note that Gamru Village School is a registered charity in India (#182450068), and has an FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act) account. An FCRA account is required by TRF and the Indian government to transfer funds to India. TRF has approved District Grants in India provided the recipient of the District Grant has an FCRA account.

The Gamru Village School provides free education to poor, disfavored children in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, India. This school was started in 2004 to serve the children of the local poor community and the children of the migrant laborers. Many of these families cannot afford to send their children to the government schools because although they are free, there are still some fees, and families would have to buy books and uniforms. There is no cost to attend Gamru Village School. Only the children from the poorest families are accepted at the school.

The school currently serves 156 children, has 10 teachers and 2 staff. The school survives only from donations from local and international sponsors. The Rotary Club of Del Mar has supported this school through previous grants. A Matching Grant project was done in 2009 to give a great boost to the school by supplying key equipment and support including kitchen equipment, bookcases, uniforms, books, school supplies, computers, water filtration system, etc. and a District Grant was done in 2017. See Matching Grant project D-1311 and District Grant project P-1840.

The school needs new furniture and equipment including desks, chairs, mats, notebooks, and uniforms for 150 students. They also need funding for six months of meals for the students and some operating expenses. This grant provides for these needs at cost of 232,000 INR or approx. US$3,500. We will be working locally with the Rotarians from The Dharamsala Rotary Club in District 3070. They have done many projects with District 5340 in the past.
