Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Yorktown

Total Budget: $5,000

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: The Rotary Club of Yorktown, NY will partner with the a local organization, Alliance for Safe Kids (ASK), to introduce and develop a program for Community Understanding and Support of Youth Mental Health.

The Yorktown Rotary Club will team up with the Alliance for Safe Kids to bring to our community an educational program that will open a community dialogue regarding Youth Mental Health.

•The Project will consist of obtaining an educational license of the Youth Mental Health Film "NO LETTING GO," which will allow us unlimited community showings for an entire year. We will host 5 or more showings.

•We will host Community Event screenings which will include a question and answer session so that everyone can participate in the discussion.

•We will coordinate with all public buildings in the community to have additional screenings of the film.

•We will sponsor Community Educational and Awareness Booklets called "Understanding and Supporting Youth Mental Health."

•We will conduct Community Surveys to measure the effectiveness of the film and the booklets.

Community need:

Our community, like many others, has experienced an increase in youth anxiety, depression, drug use and suicide as reported by Police, educators, hospitals and civic groups. According to the Center for Disease Control 2015, suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people between the ages of 10 and 24 years old across the United States. In 2009 our town lost 9 young adults from the graduating class to drugs and suicide and that number has continued to grow at an alarming rate. The time is way overdue to have this type of program and valuable conversation in our communities. We need to educate, encourage, and empower our youth, parents, coaches, teachers, adults, Emergency Service Personnel and public officials so that they can gain knowledge, be supportive, and offer the resources that our children need to succeed.

Please help us to Host, Unite, and Inspire our community.

•By "HOSTING," we bring an open and candid conversation to our community about Youth Mental Health.

•By "UNITE" we bring to our community a collaborative effort by enjoining our youth, parents, coaches, teachers, adults, Emergency Service Personnel, public officials and local community groups together to create a sustainable change in our town that will build goodwill and better friendships.

•By "INSPIRE" we engage everyone in our community in an insightful, educational program that will enlighten our town about Youth Mental Health and hopefully prevention.

"Service Above Self" begins not only in our own communities but around the world, and it is imperative that we begin this worthwhile program not only in our community but in all communities as it would be beneficial to all concerned.
