Project Description

Country: Bermuda

Location: Bermuda

Total Budget: $5,000

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

Activity Type: Health: General

Summary: To improve the knowledge of health and healthy practices while promoting holistic health in Bermuda.

The Hamilton Rotary Club ("HRC") will run a local project aimed at promoting better health practices in Bermuda. In Bermuda, the incidence of kidney disease, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and hypertension is disproportionately high compared to any other country of the OECD. There is an overwhelming and urgent need to sensitize the population about healthier practices, life choices and participation in screening campaigns to decrease the risk factors for the above diseases.

Project objective:

To increase awareness, education and screening for non communicable diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, etc.

Project timeline:

It is anticipated that the project will be completed within one year.

Project funding:

Project cost is $5,000. This grant application is for $2,500. The HRC will raise and contribute $2,500 through various fundraising activities notably, a "Hamilton Rotary 5K run" which will not only raise funds but also serve as a platform to promote better and active lifestyle within the local community.

Utilization of funds:

In partnership with a Bermuda Registered Charity - "CHARM", the HRC project will;

1. Run radio advertisements with "CHARM facts" about sugar intake, salt intake and other individual health related matters.

2. Creation of video and audio interviews with physicians and other healthcare professionals to share risks, red flags and rewards of preventative approaches - share via the weekly HRC radio broadcast, websites and social media.

3. Develop other health educational materials as necessary for those not captured by online information drive at a reasonable comprehension level and delivered at easily accessible locations.

4. Organize health educational seminars - hosting professionals and, separately, non-professionals

5. Screening education programs - to be hosted in churches and other organizations interested in setting up programs to screen their members

Involvement of club members:

1. Organizing and active participation in the Hamilton 5K Run, a fundraising and awareness event.

2. Staffing of screening activities

3. Active participation in educational and sensitization programs

4. Inviting speakers and active participation in the weekly Rotary Club luncheon meetings which are radio broadcasted to the Bermudian public/audience.
