There is a need to not only provide books (literacy) and activities to our elementary schools but also basic ethic and character training. The 4 way test is a simple solution to both needs. Having seen this project done in my previous club in Logan Utah, I felt it was important for the Cheyenne After Hours club to begin this important outreach to our schools. With dictionaries going to 3rd graders, having this coloring/activity book go to the 2nd graders not only provides a book to many kids who do not own one, but also a solution to some of the challenges they will face growing up. By introducing the 4 way test and teaching them about it they can use those simple four lines to resolved conflict in the classroom or on the playground.
Last year provided 2nd graders from 5 low income elementary schools with the coloring book "Andy and Elmer's Apple Dumpling Adventure" This was about 220 sgudents. We also provided each school library a hard copy of the book and each teacher received a soft copy to be used in the classroom. The students and teachers were very grateful for these books and the lesson on the 4 way test.
This year we would like to add 3 more schools to our list making a total of 8 schools. The costs of the project are as follows:
324 coloring books $850
3 Hard back books $53.85
9 soft cover books $84.60
misc costs $11.55
Total cost $1000
Club $500
District grant $500
Rotarians will be going into each school and doing a 10 minute presentation on the 4 way test and how to use it to resolve problems at school, recess, or at home.
