Project Description

Country: Honduras

Location: Tela Honduras

Total Budget: $6,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: Sewing machines, sewing supplies and furniture for new sewing center in The Botanical Gardens area.

Children attending the four schools in the Botanical garden area of northern Honduras are required to wear uniforms in order to attend school. The population in that area is very poor and the cost of uniforms is from $10 - $15. Since the cost is prohibitive for many families we want to create a sewing center where families could make their own uniforms.

This would be set up as a trial vocational training center to not only make uniforms but to provide a way for the families to make and sell products. The Craig club will purchase sewing machines, supplies for the machines and furniture. The furniture will consist of tables, chairs, storage units, lights and ac units. The training will be provided by INFOP(The National Institute of Professional Formation). This organization was established in 1972 to develop Honduras growth socially and economically by providing training and certification to deal with the challenges of modernizing Honduras.

The building where the training center will be housed will be an addition to the Josefa Lastiri Morazan school being built through a grant by the Greeley centennial club. The contact in the area is the family of a teacher at the Dos Rios Elementry school in Eaton. This will be the third project in the area that has been implemented.
