Project Description Country: Nepal Location: Ramechhap Village Total Budget: $7,985 Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy Activity Type: Community Development: Disaster Recovery Summary: Rebuild Ramechhap school in Manthali village damaged by May, 2015 earthquake in Nepal The Ramechhap school was damaged by the destructive earthquake of 2015 and needs significant reconstruction. During the earthquake, six people died in this village and all 69 homes were damaged. Today, many homes have not yet been reconstructed, including the school. The students are utilizing a temporary classroom which is open to the wind, sun and rain. This limits the effectiveness of classroom teaching. Three classrooms are still being used in the badly damaged building and this scares the children inside these classrooms. This is a problem in the rain season as rain enters the classroom and creates disruptions for the teachers and students. There are currently 92 students in the schools up to grade 5. The villagers in this area are all part of the untouchable cast so they have poor economic status. They cannot afford to send their children to other schools because many of these children must work in the fields to manage food twice daily to eat. The project will require 4 months to complete once funding is received. There is some urgency in receiving the funds now as it will be better to start and complete the school reconstruction before winter, so the school can operate at full capacity. The plan is to reconstruct 4 classrooms in the school. The villagers are more than happy to provide the labor in kind to reconstruct their school. The funds for this project will be used to provide construction materials. It is interesting to note that the villagers have put reconstruction of the school at a higher priority than reconstruction of their homes because they are worried about their children's future. This project will be managed by Rotarian Sudip Koirala, Present Elect Nominee of the Rotary Club of Rudramati, Kathmandu in Rotary International District 3292, Nepal and Bhutan. Our Rotary Club of Fort Collins, After Work, has worked with Sudip since 2009 and have successfully completed nearly 50 projects with Sudip in Nepal. Sudip is very conscientious and always completes these projects. This project, selected by Sudip, will restore one more of many schools damaged in the devastating 2015 earthquake. We feel this is a very worthwhile project because it will restore education to the children in a small village of untouchables who receive very little assistance from others. In addition to Sudip, several Rotaract members will assist with the project management and reconstruction.
