NEED: There are many children in Fairbanks who receive free and reduced meals during the school year because they live in constricted financial circumstances. Their families cannot afford to pay approximately $200 for the tuition to attend the fabulous summer camps on a wide variety of educational topics available for kids through the UAF Summer Sessions. For more information about the more than 46 specialty camps available go to https://www.uaf.edu/summer/programs/camps/
PROJECT: This request would fund approximately 10 low income children to enroll in a camp. Attending some of these, such as aerial skills, golf and dance camps, can have a very positive impact on child health. Gardening & cooking camps help children with disease prevention through improved nutrition. Expression through the arts is a peaceful way to reduce the stress of living in poverty. All the camps are educational, but the career focused ones such as archaeology, law enforcement and vet care are great examples of incorporating literacy.
TIMELINE: Children are being enrolled now. The funds could be used immediately and a report completed within the required timeline.
ROTARIAN INVOLVEMENT: Since this was not in our original budget for the year, and it is a fast turn around, there is not a lot of "hands on involvement". However, the Board of Directors has approved the project and Club Rotarians have already reached into their pockets and solicited from others to raise nearly $800. $780 was given to the Summer Camp director with a check from the club on 5/14. Other club Rotarians have expressed an interest in donating. We are confident in raising the remaining $220 for a match. Some of the camps are being held where Rotarians work and colleagues (potential Rotarians!) are involved as instructors or supporters.
