Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Valentine, Nebraska

Total Budget: $1,050

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Food/Agriculture: General

Summary: Processing and packaging of meat to be donated to the St John's Food Pantry in Valentine, Ne.

The St John's Food Pantry serves the Valentine, Nebraska community and surrounding area. The Food Pantry serves over 1,500 people annually. In addition to canned and dry goods, the pantry provides its clients with some meat products.

The Ft Niobrara Wildlife Refuge near Valentine, Nebraska harvests a number of elk each year as part of its herd management plan. The animals are evaluated for herd health management purposes and the meat is donated to one of the local food pantries. The Valentine Rotary Club is requesting district grant funds to help pay for the processing and packaging of the meat from 3 elk in the fall of 2018. The Rotarians will negotiate a price for the processing and deliver the packaged meat to the St. John's Food Pantry for distribution to families in need in the Valentine area.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

Because Nebraska Game and Parks decided to pay for the processing of all elk harvested from the Ft Niobrara Wildlife Refuge in 2018 and the notice of this change was given months after district grant funds had been received, the Valentine Rotary Club proposes to use the grant funds for the following project:

The Valentine Rotary Club is proposing to cooperate with the Mount Hope Cemetery Board in Valentine, Nebraska to replace old and dying trees at the community's cemetery as well as establish new plantings within the cemetery boundaries. The goal is to plant potted trees in attempt to achieve a higher rate of survival. There will be a variety of species planted to help prevent loss due to species specific diseases. This will also help provide variety and beauty throughout the cemetery for years to come.

The Valentine Rotary Club will use grant funds to purchase the trees. Club members will order the trees as well as coordinate delivery and planting of the trees. We plan to work with 4-H, Boy Scouts and other volunteer groups to assist with the planting. Depending upon weather, we anticipate planting the trees during April and are exploring having the planting coincide with Arbor Day 2019. The staff and residents of the local developmental center will water the newly planted trees on an ongoing basis.

In November, we were notified that Nebraska Game and Parks had decided to pay for all of the processing of elk harvested from the Ft. Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge and that funding would not be required from the Valentine Rotary Club. The club stepped away and began looking for a new project to meet the grant criteria. However, on February 21, 2019, six members of the Valentine Rotary Club picked up the elk meat from the locker and delivered it to the St John's Food Pantry.
