Project Description

Country: USA

Location: O'Neill NE

Total Budget: $2,050

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Provide emergency Defibrillator for Senior Center in town and Aid with Meals on Wheels

The local Senior Center has a need for an AED (Auto Emergency defibrillator). It will be used by personnel that will be trained as part of this project. It incorporates a sequence for visual and voice prompts to help rescuers follow established protocols for the use of the AED. It further records all usage and data so medical professionals can see what a patient's needs and history is; of a particular incident. It is an important first response tool for the venerable population present at the center, on a daily basis. Members of the local Rotary club are also members of local Rescue and Fire Department. They, along with the other rescue members, are going to organize, and oversee the training of the staff at the Senior Center on the use of the new defibrillator.

As we are not certain of the total cost of this machine (we estimate $1500), and training at this time, we are also requesting an addition to a previous project that was a subject of an earlier grant. This need is there on a continuing basis. From previous application data, it will exceed the total of the grant.

Senior residents, aged 60 and older, and qualified disabled (in the Holt County Communities of O'Neill, Chambers, and Inman) receive home-delivered warm, nutritious meals prepared by the O'Neill Golden Age Senior Center. These "Meals on Wheels" are delivered by community volunteers on Mondays-Fridays throughout the year. The purchase of the three-part containers will help to reduce the cost of the meals to the qualified consumers. After the meals are placed in the cartons, a plastic film is applied with a heat-sealing machine at the preparation kitchen. Sixteen cartons of 800 trays (12,800 total)will accommodate needs for the 2018-2019 fiscal year. Based on previous year's pricing, the total cost to purchase a year's supply of these cartons will exceed the grant. We will purchase as many containers as we have funds available from excess in the defibrillator project. This expenditure supports the health of our aging and disabled population in the Holt County area.

The local Rotary Club completely organizes and delivers the entire "Meals on Wheels" program for an entire week each month. All members participate, in shifts, for each of 4 routes on each day.

This project is completed. The Defibulator was delivered to the Senior Center. The local fire department completed training for the employees of that facility. We bought trays for the center to reach the $2000 amount of the grant.
