Operation Holiday Homework is put on but the Boys & Girls club of Orange County. Basically, the kids earn points for completing their homework every day they are at the club. During December, the kids get to go pick out gifts for their parents, siblings etc., and the kids who were best at doing their homework get to go first. The gifts are then wrapped on site by volunteers, so the kids have their holiday shopping done and can be proud of what they have as gifts for their family. (Many of these families have nothing for Christmas.)
This 1) Gives the kids self esteem for having gifts for their family. 2) Promotes education and basic literacy as these kids have a real incentive to make sure their home work gets done every day. 3) Promotes the parents support of their education.
The kids who participate take getting their homework done very seriously.
Club members will assist in all aspects of the project including helping the kids select gifts for their family members, wrapping presents, walking them to their parents, and general assistance running the event. This grant pays for all the wrapping paper, tape, supplies and other general goods required to wrap the presents for the kids to give to their family.
