Project Description

Country: Tbd

Location: Tbd

Total Budget: $500

Area of Focus: Water and sanitation

Activity Type: Water: Sanitation

Summary: Distribute 800 Water Pasteurization Indicators (WAPIs) to communities in need.

WAPI's: Throughout the world there are communities that don't have access to clean water. In order to make the water safe to drink, it must be heated to a temperature that kills the harmful bacteria. The WAPI, by using a specialized wax inside of a clear tube, indicates when the water has been heated sufficiently to kill the bacteria. When the wax melts inside of the clear, plastic tube, the water has been pasteurized. Because pasteurization occurs well below the boiling point (145F vs. 212F), communities no longer have to bring their water to a boil, saving fuel costs. When the WAPI is removed from the water, the wax cools, hardens, and is ready for the next time.

The project will be completed by the club members during the winter months. Work parties will be organized to assemble the individual units. Each kit comes with enough components to make 200 WAPI's and takes an estimated 4 hours to assemble all of the units. The kits will be purchased as soon as funds are available and we will have all 800 units assembled and shipped by April, 2019.

The total cost of the WAPI project is estimated to be $500. We are requesting a matching grant of $250. The money will go towards the following:

- $400: 4 WAPI Kits (makes 800 individual WAPI's and includes shipping costs)

- $100: Cost to distribute the WAPI's to communities
