Project Description

Country: USA

Location: Whitefish

Total Budget: $14,225

Area of Focus: Economic and community development

Activity Type: Community Development: General

Summary: Whitefish High School students and Rotarians will construct 24 raised planter beds in the Production Garden of the Whitefish Schools CSE for use by K-12 and adult students.

The Center for Sustainability and Entrepreneurship (CSE) will be an innovative educational center at Whitefish Schools, for students in K-12 and Adult Education classes, providing hands on learning experiences in sustainable energy, agriculture, forestry, natural resources, and entrepreneurship. The fundamental objective of the program is to prepare Whitefish students for college, career, and citizenship by immersing them in interdependent, real-world programs. The state of the art "net zero" facility will include classrooms, laboratories, a greenhouse, energy systems, production gardens, orchards, and an experimental forest. It will be located on a three-acre parcel of Whitefish high school land. In August 2018, Whitefish Club Rotarians, along with Whitefish High School students and Martel Construction volunteers, will construct 24 raised planter beds in the Production Garden (see photo). The funds of this grant will pay for planter bed materials with the remaining $9,225 from the School District.

Addendum to Project Description (added after the project was signed)

Rotary Club of Whitefish will be recognized through press releases, interviews, and publications related to the Center for Sustainability and Entrepreneurship. The Superintendent would also be happy to participate in a photo opportunity and press release that Rotary may wish to push out.

Reason for dropping: Dear Brian Furey and Sue Carstens,

The Rotary Club of Whitefish was unable to accomplish the project that the 2018-2019 District Grant was intended for. The District Grant was applied for and approved so that The Rotary Club of Whitefish could fund and work along side Whitefish High School students to build 24 raised planter beds in the Production Garden of the Whitefish School's Center for Sustainability and Entrepreneurship, used by K-12 grade students. Instead, the Whitefish School District, without notification, proceeded to have all the planter beads built without our help. We have, therefore, returned the $2500 grant awarded to us. A check was sent from the Rotary Club of Whitefish to the District on 11/29/1
