Project Description

Country: USA

Location: El Progresso, Guatemala

Total Budget: $2,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Activity Type: Education: General

Summary: The Rotary club of Hamilton will deliver 1 computer and provide training for the students in El Progresso, Guatemala

The Rotary club of Hamilton would like to purchase 1 computer including software to benefit the local students in El Progresso, Guatemala. A "learning computer" for the younger students will be included.

Rural Guatemalan schools are plagued with insufficient teaching materials. The children are eager to learn and the teachers want to teach, but there are no suitable resources. The majority of teachers and none of the students or parents have ever used a computer.

Hamilton Rotary club would like to purchase 1 desk top computer, keyboard, and monitor for the local school.Included will be needed software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Quicken.Local teachers will be contacted so that they can give us an idea of which programs will best benefit the school. One small learning-computer will be purchased for the youngest students in the school. The Rotary club of Hamilton will send 9 students from our local Interact club to teach the local students how to use this equipment. They will spend 3 days working at the local school. Both the Guatemalan and US students will benefit!

For the past 11 years, the Rotary Club of Hamilton has worked with the Corvallis Interact club by teaching them the importance of helping others, both Globally and locally.

Each year the Interact club has donated hundreds of dollars helping International projects.

This year, Hamilton Rotarians are working with our Interact members to raise the money needed to send them to Guatemala. We are organizing fund raisers, media coverage, and all necessary communications. Rotarians will travel with the Interact members and Rotarians will be with them during their work projects in El Progresso

Rotarians will assist in organizing the El Progresso community so that the computer training can take place. Rotarians involvement is outlined in the proposed budget.

Hamilton Rotarians will ensure that we share our experiences with other Montana Rotary clubs.

Hamiltons "teaching team" will travel during the 2018 summer and the 3 days of teaching will be completed in that time.
